NEW Adelaide United manager Rini Coolen may well be on the hunt for a brand new keeper to replace World Cup Socceroo Eugene Galekovic.

Galekovic's management confirmed the A-League's Goalkeeper of the Year was on the radar of the three exotic European markets - Russia, Greece and Turkey - before United plays its first friendly of the season against Galaxy at Con Makris Park from 7pm tonight.

However Coolen's first task is to secure a striker to replace Lloyd Owusu who has been ruled out for three months.

Adelaide football director Michael Petrillo said Owusu still had persistent knee problems after knee surgery last month.

`'Lloyd has an arthroscopy and it could be up to three months before he can play,'' Petrillo said.

`'We're certainly looking at the option of replacing him with a striker for the short-term.''

Adelaide will be understrength for the clash with five players ruled out.

Skipper Travis Dodd and Robert Cornthwaite are still recovering from adductor surgery.

Teenager Joe Costa may be out for weeks after last week injuring the same knee which required a reconstruction in 2009 while Fabian Barbiero was recovering from ankle ligament damage.

However Adelaide's gameplan for the Galaxy clash may have taken a dramatic twist since the appointment of Coolen was made official on Monday.

He has instructed United's second in charge Phil Stubbins to stick to the `'Dutch blueprint'' for tonight's clash.

Stubbins - at the helm for a month of pre-season training - was shaping up to play with a 4-4-2 formation before Coolen intervened.

The two-striker system was set to be tested against Galaxy with Serginho van Dijk and Mathew Leckie at the pointy end.

Argentinean playmaker Marcos Flores was at the top end of the diamond-shaped midfield while Paul Reid was being groomed to be the holder.

However Stubbins' plan headed into the dustbin as Coolen was adamant that the Dutch system - a variation of the 4-3-3 formation - which has been marketed heavily towards youth footballers by the Football Federation Australia would be the Reds trademark style.

The `'Dutch'' formation was used by former Reds boss Aurelio Vidmar for the past three seasons before he was promoted to the national teams' system in May.

Coolen returned to the Netherlands yesterday and is expected to lead the Reds from the bench during the club's friendly against A-League opposition when the Reds host Wellington Phoenix on July 16.

I dropped into training the other day and Euge wasn't there i wonder if he's trailing at the moment?

I think the club was probably considering the signing of a new striker anyway i guess this just cements the need for one. Can we sign a foreign striker to replace Owusu while he's injured?

For the duration of his injury, like any other injury replacement. But once he's recovered, that's it.
Because of that I'd probably prefer sourcing an Australian striker (if there are any left) so they can stay within the squad and just fill part of the 23-man teamsheet.

Who wrote that article? And why are they passing ill-informed suggestions on formations?

And wasn't Owusu a dumb signing, FFS. Why did we sign him? Seriously? I mean, he tries hard, so I like him, he just cant play

Drowner, I have it from a player within the team that Coolen did in fact tell the player that's its 4-3-3 this year

If Eugene does go, id be happy with Birighitti in goals and then look for a back-up.

I think there's this idea floating around the media that everyone at the club and the fans wanted Stubbins to get the job and it's un-australian that we have apointed a foreigner!

I hope the club looks around the state league and the AU youth for the best young striker around and gives them the chance in Owusu's absence. To bring in a foreign guy for 3 months is a daft idea imo.

Thought we did that already - Monterosso, Mitris??

Apart from that which current FFSA striker would make the cut?

Perry? He's not a striker.

Don't you mean Evan Kostopolous?

Oh no.
Pissant city strikes again.

(I really dislike the term "un-australian".)

i agree, when it was said stubbins was in contention i got the feeling it was the completel opposite, but now that we have the experienced euro coach its all about poor stubbins, classic adelaide small town!

REALLY REALLY have to feel for owusu, with the bad luck he had last season ontop of his poor form, i really got the feeling he was
going to give this season a real crack with a proper pre season under his belt, and i ges on a personal note i wanted to see him succeed cos we havnt had a striker before that plays with as much heart as he does.

Galekovic, lets just hope we get to give him a standing send off at hindmarsh when he goes, though i doubt it, i think one day he will be at training and the next birra is in goals.

Surely we will get some cash for him though, i mean langeraks tranfer was massive, though he is younger then eugene so who knows.

when Eugene goals im happy to see birra step in, sign a good state league keeper as reserve, and use the cash from eugenes transfer to fill other gaps in our squad ....... next leckie will go :(

With Van Dijk in the team I can't see where Owusu fits.. I don't think we should have both. Time to go Owusu. Heart alone doesn't score goals or win matches.

I remember at the time of his signing Owusu's record was pretty good, BUT he is not suited to our gamelan at all, anyone who watched him should of known that, the whole situation reeks of a DVD/wikipedia signing.

i disagree. at the time we signed him our gameplan was to bombard the box with crosses from Jamo an Cassio but they only had the head of Cristiano to aim for. I liked his recruitment to start with but after we signed him our gameplan seemed to change and we stopped crossing the ball as much and decided to play the ball to the feet of the strikers instead.
So it was a daft signing if at the time the coach had decided to change the game plan when he was signed.

It was meant from the local system. After ALL this time the production line has been very bare. :(

I have thought about your post about the crosses its a very good observation and i think i agree with it, although i think we played the same structure but our play or 'system' broke down due to the poor form of jamo and cassio, we sat deeper and with no overlap and our striker came into play earlier.

I would still say that the coaching staff should have been aware that he cannot hold the ball up considering that is usually a requirement of a tall player playing in that style. When we played him him it was like we were oblivious that he wasn’t able to do that and it became obvious very quickly.

Vidmars solution of makeshift strikers in dodd and leckie was very disappointing. It was almost like he gave up trying to win. HAPPY hes GONE!
